Although some happy moments existed, our ancestor's lives were characterized by hard work and adversity.
There are many questions and gaps about what our ancestors did in Celle and Faeto many years ago. we will try to answer some questions about their daily lives:

What did they wear?

The traditional dress in Celle and Faeto was, as in most of Italy, characterized by some basic elements and personal choices.

Both man and woman covered their heads not only to protect them from the sun or from the cold wind but also as a symbolic action. When a girl grew up and married she would cover her head, symbolizing that she was not free anymore. Still today some elderly women cover their head as a sign of respect before entering church .

Other women's clothing were shawls, aprons, blouses and one or more heavy skirts to keep warm. Women also had the key to the house because they were the last ones to go out and the first ones to come home and prepare dinner.

Men's clothing included a hat, shirt, waistcoat, jacket and trousers.

Men and women had a particular dress for holidays, which was also worn on Sunday. Shoes were precious and expensive, thus men and women only had one pair of shoes in their lives.

About today...

Today obviously they wear normal clothes but you can still see some other elderly people wearing some of the traditional elements.

Where did they live?

The main problem of the past was the cold. For this reason in Celle and Faeto traditional houses were small, with a main room in which there was a chimney and where the daily life of a family took place. For a long time fire was their only way to cook, and their only source to provide warmth and light. In this room they ate, women cooked and sewed, and the old generations told their tales. Bedrooms were separated from the rest of the house and there was storage space upstairs or downstairs. Toilets did not exist. Because of the cold, they would often keep animals such as chickens and donkeys in the same rooms.

About today...

Still today, because the gas company doesn't want to invest money for such a small group of people, they are forced to use the fireplace to provide heat. The old houses are still the same but now they are better decorated and comfortable, with toilets inside!
